On World Food Day, Twitter witnessed an outpouring of gratitude to India’s farmers, with several thousands of tweets being tagged with the hashtag #ThankYouKisan.
The hashtag was created by the IFFCO (Indian Farmers Fertilizer Co-operative Limited), a co-operative society that produces and distributes fertilizer.

It’s our kisan behind all the food we eat made with love. This let’s say

At a time when food can be bought pre-cut, pre-peeled, pre-packaged, and and even pre-cooked, it can be easy for urban-dwellers to forget where it comes from and how much hard work goes into producing it. But on Sunday, over 4,500 people (we’re still counting) took Twitter to lavish praise on the millions of men and women who toil in farms across the nation, their lives at the mercy of the seasons.

World Food Day commemorates the creation of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation, or FAO, in 1945. The 42 nations that came together to found the FAO had twin goals – eradicating hunger and malnutrition, and managing the world’s food system more effectively, the organization’s website says.
